Every once in a while, I see posts along the lines of "is XYZ an intersex trait?" or "yeah XYZ IS an intersex trait," and that post always, without fail, has very angry people in the replies saying "mh ACTUALLY this can't be an intersex trait, otherwise 50% of the humans would be intersex!!" I see it with PCOS all the time, I recently saw it about gynecomastia as well.

My question is: so what?

Genuinely. So what if half the human population is intersex? Cuz the only explanation I can find as to why you're against the idea is "intersexism." And generally, people don't like referring to themselves as bigots. So: what kind of lies do you tell yourselves?

Because make no mistake: that is intersexism. You guys don't want more people to fall into the intersex umbrella, because you think there is nothing worse than to be intersex. Because you think intersex people are freaks of nature who can never be normal, and you all soooo desperately want to be normal. "I'm not intersex! I just have traits that are atypical for my designated sex, and that brings me grief socially and medically, but I'm not with these freaks!! I swear!!"

It's intersexism, because the idea that half the human population might be intersex makes it so much harder to ignore us, doesn't it? When we're just 1-2%, then we're forgettable, specs of dust in the grand scheme of things, and if we have atrocious fucking lives in a system built to exclude us, well! Too bad, innit? But if there are so many of us- that means you have to care for our rights and wellbeing. Can you imagine!

And it's intersexism, because if half the human population might not fit in the standard idea of "male" and "female," then that hammers home that these standards are a fucking joke. And you guys just looove standards. You guys love normality, especially when you get to be in that norm.

"These people can't be intersex! They only experience social stigma from having unusual sexual characteristics, and undergo procedures that may or may not be consentual to normalize them!" Well that's what the intersex movement is all about, so either you support us, and you aknowledge that these people also fit under our umbrella, or you don't, and you should stop pretending you ever gave a shit about any of us.
