I complain a lot about how fucking lackuster the intersex tag is anywhere, because, well, it is, but every once in a while I run into people asking for advice on how to write intersex characters. Since I always respond more or less the same thing, I figure I might as well compile it here.

First of all, you probably don't need to hear it if you're on this blog, but: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LOOK UP WHAT INTERSEX MEANS. There are ressources on this blog. Skim-reading wikipedia counts too. I'm saying this because anytime anyone mention intersex folks in any context, my first reflex is always "are they actually talking about us or are they conflating us with nb and/or futas again." To be clear, you can absolutely write a non binary intersex character, you need to know these are two different things. As per usual, "intersex" is not a gender.

Okay now that we've established the basics, here is my actual advice: you should go either one of those two ways,

  • Pick an intersex variation (like idk Swyer syndrome) and see how it'll impact your character.
  • Pick an intersex trait (like having a high amount of T) and reverse engineer what could bring such thing, and just how it impacts your character.

Wikipedia has a pretty extenive list of intersex variations, as does the intersex MOGAI wiki. You can also you know look up "bearded woman" or "XXY chromosomes" or something and see where you'll end up.

Bear in mind that some intersex variations can be disabling, so you'll have to write them like a disabled character- possibly with a treatment to take, possibly with limitations due to their disability, ect. Look that up as well.

I know this is no miracle recipe, but really, when writing any time of minority, "do your research" is about the only thing one can say, so I hope this post helped you figure out what and how to search at least!
