What does "intersex" mean?

"Intersex" is a catch-all term referring to people who are born with sexual characteristics that don't quite fit in the "male/female" dichotomy. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • chromosomes (like having XXY chromosomes)
  • gonads (being XX but having testes)
  • genitals (having a micropenis)
  • hormones (having a testosterone deficiency would qualify)
  • secondary sexual characteristics ("bearded women")
  • probably a whole ton of other stuff I forgot about.

Being intersex has nothing to do with gender; intersex people can be cis, trans, men, women, non-binary folks, just like most people. Being intersex has also nothing to do with being a futanari (sorry guys, that's one variation that is near-impossible. Please stop tagging your futa porn as intersex though.) A non-intersex person can be called perisex, endosex, or dyadic.

For more information, I will redirect you to this zine, which cover the basics of what intersex means in an educative way. Or you cal look up your local charity, these usually have extensive FAQs on the subject (here's interACT for instance).
